I love the role that sport plays in our lives, but I also know that to institutions, coaches, and sometimes parents winning takes precedence over preparing for the other 90% of your life when it's over.
I was a scholarship basketball player at "The real HU" Howard University from 2003-2007. I was on the all rookie team as a freshman, all-conference team and defensive player of the year as well as #2 nationally in steals. My junior year I joined the 1000 point club and after graduating was named to Howard University hall of fame. I am also an Indiana All-Star class of 2003. After my dream of going pro was deferred I was self-defeated and was without direction for a long time. With the help of mentors that I sought out, family, friends, and other online resources, I was able to pick up the pieces and start shaping the life I wanted. As an elite athlete, I understand the struggle with finding meaning and purpose when the game is over. I also understand that I'm not alone in that feeling. There are millions of athletes worldwide that are in the same boat. Win after basketball is a community for us to grow, transform, and not just survive but THRIVE!
